Home

Welcome to the web site of the New Barnet meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).

The meeting house is at 55, Leicester Road, New Barnet, EN5 5EL, where we meet for worship at 10.30am on the first and third (and fifth if there is one) Sunday of each month.

Visitors are always welcome.

See below under Worship for details of upcoming meetings.  On the Sundays when we are not at the Meeting House, we meet online. If you would like to join us online please send us an email at info@newbarnetquakers.org.uk.

For the postal address and a map, see the Contact page.

Quaker meetings are organised by area, and we are part of North London Area Quaker Meeting.  And beyond that we are part of Quakers in Britain.

For more about Quakers for newcomers, see the Discovering Quakers site. All are welcome to attend a Quaker meeting, even if only out of curiosity.

Worship

Nasturtiums in a vase in the sunlightOur Meeting for Worship is currently held on the first, third and fifth (if there is one) Sunday of every month at 10.30am in the meeting house. Visitors are welcome.

If you are travelling a long way to be with us it may be a good idea to contact us in advance on info@newbarnetquakers.org.uk to check that the meetings are indeed going ahead. But it is fine just to turn up a little before 10.30am.  On the Sundays when we are not at the Meeting House, we continue to meet online. If you would like to join us online please send us an email at info@newbarnetquakers.org.uk.

If you would like to know more about what to expect at a Meeting for Worship, take a look at the How Quakers worship page on the Quakers in Britain web site.

We would be happy to welcome children; please contact us in advance by emailing children@newbarnetquakers.org.uk so that we can make suitable arrangements.  Otherwise, just turn up.

On the first Sunday of every month, we meet at 9am for breakfast meeting. We share breakfast together, then discuss readings from Quaker Faith & Practice before Meeting for Worship. All welcome, there is always enough food (bread, jam, tea or coffee).

Lettings

The meeting house was purpose-built in 1939. It has a very pleasant secluded and secure garden opening off the main hall.  Access to the lawn is up a short flight of steps.  The meeting house comprises:

  • the main hall, 10m by 8m, which seats about 50 people,
  • a smaller upper room, about 6m square, which seats about 20 people.

Both of these are available for lettings, preferably on a regular basis. We sometimes support one-off bookings, but we do not let for children’s parties.

The nursery school which used to run on weekday mornings has now closed and we would welcome a new tenant for that time. We encourage community use at other times, including afternoons, evenings and Saturdays.

There is a kitchen for making hot drinks and light snacks.

The main hall is fully accessible and has a hearing loop, and there is a disabled toilet.  There are four parking spaces.

For further information or to make a booking please contact lettings@newbarnetquakers.org.uk.

Current rates:

Main Hall: weekdays £50 (minimum 3 hourly rate)

Upper Room: weekdays £30 (minimum 3 hourly rate)
weekends £40 (minimum 3 hourly rate)

Occasionally outside speakers are invited to the group – a recent one was the poet Lorraine Mariner. Also some members of the group have an in depth knowledge of certain poets – at our October meeting Michael gave a talk on W H Auden.
For further information about the poetry group contact webmaster@newbarnetquakers.org.uk and I can put you in touch with the organisers.
The group meets on the second Saturday in each month from 2.30pm to 4.45pm, excluding July and August. The cost is £5 (or £6 when there is an outside guest speaker), to include tea and cakes.
The next few dates are:

  • May 11th 2024: Michael King to present on Walter de la Mare
  • June 8th 2024: Lorraine Mariner, published poet, is returning to the group
